The Minstrel Show

Little Brother – The Minstrel Show

The Minstrel Show is about a fictional television network called “UBN” (U Black N***as Network), which is a satire of stereotypical programs and advertisements for African Americans. For example, on “Cheatin”, Phonte (performing under his alter-ego “Percy Miracles”), spoofs the over-dramatic R&B sagas performed by singers such as R. Kelly and Ronald Isley. Many of the skits contain tongue-in-cheek references to black pop-culture in the United States. But this episode of UBN is on Sunday, September 11. The album plays out like a variety show, with an introduction, live musical performances, backstage interludes, and commercials. It showcases and pokes fun at many of the facets of Black culture circa the mid-2000s, while still expressing love and respect for all of its facets. Nearly all of the production is handled by 9th Wonder, while Phonte and Big Pooh are at the top of their games lyrically.

Blueprint – 1988

Blueprint pays homage to a bygone era. He pays homage to the beats, breaks and themes of possibly the most revered year in hip hop, 1988, one of the more celebrated years in rap music history.  Blueprint’s “admiration for music released during ’88 is clear, and he manages to honor that period’s music, drawing influence from its distinctive sound, using “some old dirty drum-break shit” and soulful loops, without making the endeavor sound like clever mimicry.” – Albumism.com

BUSDRIVER – Fear of a Black Tangent

At the beginning of Fear of a Black Tangent, BUSDRIVER dies. After his passing, his unreleased material is being sold, and his artistic vision is being meddled with. He is obviously not around to have a say in anything (because he’s super dead). Though he’s selling more in his death than he ever did in life, he is being taken advantage of (he even jokes that his corpse is brought to an award show).

Beauty and the Beat

Edan – Beauty and the Beat

More of a “tonal” concept album, Beauty and the Beat is about mixing up Rock and Roll with Rap music, which turns into a true homage to the history of rap music.

Late Registration

Kanye West – Late Registration

Late Registration primarily focuses on Kanye’s transition into celebrity. We see this in the skits (where his fraternity of poor people kicks him out after finding out he’s been making money), Having achieved success with The College Dropout, Kanye ruminates on the pros and cons of fame, often comparing his past to his present and worrying about the future.

Pete Philly & Perquisite – Mindstate

Pete Philly and Perquisite are a duo whose first album, Mindstate, was a concept album that ran through the gamut of emotions. It’s an album where every track represents a different emotion.

On The Mouse and the Mask, Danger Mouse samples music from various television shows airing on Cartoon Network’s programming block Adult Swim while MF DOOM spits over it, featuring cartoon-sampled beats and characters from Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Sealab 2021, and Space Ghost Coast To Coast

N***az and White Girlz

Kirb and Chris – N***az and White Girlz

N***az and White Girlz is a thugged out interpretation of the eightiess and new wave. Kirb & Chris hit the club one night to try and score a couple white girls. They end up having to deal with the fallout from their inter-racial relationships.

Itstrumental

Prince Paul – Itstrumental

Just like most of his other work, Itstrumental is a concept album, loosely tied together with an underlying story. Since there isn’t an emcee to tell the story, Paul relies strictly on the use of samples (with the exception of a few guests) to guide the listeners. Opening with a parody of the popular TV show “Law & Order: SVU”, we learn that detectives are in search of our favorite Long Island beatmaker.  

SoloPlexus – Illusive Avenues Of 6 Intrinsic Musicians

Illusive Avenues is unique in that it’s presented as a “group” album, but is actually just one rapper: Insight. He takes on the duties of six other people and even raps in six different voices. Quiz Verbal, Jaquan Ali, Red D Rock G, Hakim Rock Live, Kaju Dash, BussDatz are all variations of Insight as she showcases his ability in this fun project.  The production in Illusive Avenues stands out and sounds like golden era boom bap mixed with smooth soulful jazz rap.

Tajai & SupremeEx – Nuntype

On Nuntype, Tajai is a deity who wields the power of Creation. Swirling within the doldrums of his ponderous age, the deity has become bored and seeks to satiate his loneliness by mindlessly toying with the fates of his human “playthings.” But after many millennia of evolution, the humans have become advanced lifeforms, and they have progressed so mightily in their civilized, organically-technologized culture. As a Prophecy is foretold by the stars and comes to pass, Chaos ensues, threatening the very grip the deity needs to maintain control of a universe that has outgrown him.

TM Radio

Time Machine – TM Radio

TM Radio has radio commentary interludes & introductions that fit the concept of the album well, done in a radio-show format. This concept wasn’t a stretch for the Time Machine boys, who borrowed many of the disc’s production tricks from the pirate radio show they hosted in 2004.  “Everything you hear on that CD, like when you hear the drops for Time Machine Radio, were actual drops that we used on our radio show, and the intro to TM Radio was the real intro that we used on our show,” says Comel, the least talkative of the three. “Originally, we decided to work on that CD as a special tour item which people could only buy at the shows on our tour last summer, but it ended up coming out better than we had anticipated, so we decided to turn it into an official release.”
