The Standard is a mostly lighthearted hip-hop examination of the human condition and the realities we create; the album hinges on the concept of a metaphorical gas station/mini-mart of the same name.
Welding together themes of convenience, motivation, and service with their signature convergence of verbal acrobatics, home-cooked jazz and funk-influenced beats, samples, and turntable techniques, PO uses the gas station concept to make their often complex observations more palatable to the everyday listener.
With warnings about the sacrifice of our individual privacy and freedoms, the promises of better technology, the shallow nature of mass media, the reluctance to think for oneself, and the convenience of a drive-thru culture.
