Bill Cosby Presents The Cosnarati: State of Emergency

Bill Cosby

2009

The promotional material for The Cosnarati reads: “Bill Cosby rekindles hip-hop’s socially conscious flame on Bill Cosby Presents the Cosnarati: State of Emergency. It’s all part of a grass roots effort to foster ongoing community dialogue and action by way of listening parties held at homes, community centers, churches and other locales.”

In reality, though, it is a condescending, self-righteous hypocritical take on the state of black culture from the “elder statesman” Bill Cosby. The album is presented as a “State of Emergency” on black culture and essentially is a list of what’s wrong with “kids these days.”

Cosby himself does not actually rap on the album, he executive produced the project and conceived the songs’ story concepts. Even though he assigned the rapping duties to the competent Jace the Great, Brother Hahz and Supa Nova Slim…. Cosby’s hypocritical voice permeates the entire project. The album includes songs about frustration, incarceration and, ironically, respect for women.
