Madvillain – Madvillainy

Madvillainy, one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time, is a collaborative concept between MF Doom and Madlib. It’s about two symbiotic villains, and it takes place at their grand estate: the “Madvillain Bistro Bed and Breakfast Bar and Grill Café Lounge on the Water.” Two historical figures, outlaws and desperadoes if that, the villainous pair of really nice boys who just happened to be on the wrong side of the law, three hundred and sixty degrees. In similar sequences, could not be defeated. Villains who possess supernatural abilities— villains who were the personification of carnage. “Madvillain, more accurately, the dark side of our beings”

Masta Ace – A Long Hot Summer

The story follows Ace, an underground rapper through his “Long Hot Summer” in Brooklyn, accompanied by buddy Fats Belvedere. Ace ventures through the Brooklyn streets and goes out on tour with Fats as his unofficial manager. Ace raps about and experiences different things, he tells the stories of people trying to make it in the city during rough times. He raps about the hood itself, grocery shopping, and meeting women as he gets more and more wrapped up in the Fats and his drama.      

The Streets – A Grand Don’t Come for Free

A Grand Don’t Come for Free is a story of the protagonist’s relationship with a girl named Simone, alongside the mysterious loss of £1,000 from his home (the eponymous “grand”). In the first track on the album, “It Was Supposed to Be So Easy” Skinner attempts several tasks during a day but they do not go according to plan. When he comes home he cannot find the £1,000 he has saved and his television is broken.

Gift of Gab – 4th Dimensional Rocketships Going Up

Though on 4th Dimensional Rocketships Going Up, Gift of Gab is often rapping about the stars, the moon, and different parts of the galaxy, the space that Gift of Gab really explores is inner space–the memories, emotions, and desires that constitute the core of his being. He’s not really rapping — he says he’s channeling the voices of the ancestors. He doesn’t get upset about bad things that happen — he knows life has its struggles, but that if you stay strong and listen to him, everything’s going to be okay.

Illogic – Celestial Clockwork

Celestial Clockwork is about human beings dealing with time. A lot of the songs on the album deal with time and how we use the time that we have, how time passes, how time can be wasted and not appreciated.

Kanye West – The College Dropout

The College Dropout by Kanye West is a concept record about the still-pending Higher Education Bubble. The album is all about breaking societal norms, which explains the choice of title. It’s a loose concept album around the idea of leaving the “system” and pursuing your dreams on your own terms.

Leak Bros. – Waterworld

Every song revolves around PCP and the first drug-themed PCP Park: Waterworld. On the grim dirge of a title track, the pair envisions a “drug-related theme park,” populated by leaked-out fiends. Throughout the album, Cage and Tame One each outline their experiences taking the drug.

MF DOOM – MM..FOOD

MM..FOOD finds DOOM digging deep into vocal soundbytes related, as well as fitting to his namesake and artistic vision, meticulously building a cohesive album narrative. Diligence in mind, his writing is as sharp, witty and often shocking as ever. Production-wise, DOOM utilizes a fine blend of familiar and obscure sample sources, complimentarily working together to both satisfy and intrigue. DOOM employs many food-related samples, and many of his lyrical themes are based on food metaphors. And, while MM..FOOD is mostly the work of a mad scientist in his secret lair, a sprinkling of super-villain team-ups with Count Bass D, Madlib, PNS of The Molemen, Stahhr, and Mr. Fantastik, all add to the album’s overall flavor. Even after all these years MM..FOOD remains a satisfying feast for both true believers, as well as legions of new fans who happily find their listening ears in the clutches of DOOM.

Skinnyman – Council Estate Of Mind

The tracks in Council Estate of Mind are all book-ended by dialogue excerpts from the 1982 TV movie (and Tim Roth’s acting debut) Made In Britain. The idea is that the path of Trevor the Skinhead (Roth’s character) is similar to that of Skinnyman’s: a white working-class kid has talents but no application and then embarks on a self-destructive circle of crime.

Fingathing – Fingathing and the Big Red Nebula Band

Fingathing’s latest concept, Fingathing and the Big Red Nebula Band, is aliens. Not just any old aliens, but a bunch of musical cosmic beings. The duo ‘met’ them after being fired into the cosmos in steel coffins following the faking of their own deaths on their last LP. Obviously they then recorded an album with their new extra-terrestrial friends and brought the results back to the UK

Subtle – A New White

A New White introduces, on the record (and as a recurring character in much of Subtle’s work), Hour Hero Yes, an aspiring middle-class poet and rapper. He is mentioned throughout the two Subtle LPs and both remix compilations. Hour Hero Yes is a bald man with a black and white striped face Hour Hero Yes is both hero and fool. His skull and face above it, striped shut by the lasting effects of honesty on the dead man… he is a poet ardent… He is a triumph of life over death… In the form of pushed pen remnants… and sing bones sung… He began as man… mostly weak, hardly strong… a new white, is the colloquial chronicle of his becoming… all of it taking place in a one bed room apartment in Oakland… it is the slow and burst lengthy nervous breakdown/coming to clear… of yes… a resigning of himself from himself… he lets go… and finds the weight of his words… and wild behind his eyes… At the end of the record… he opens his door… and takes a walk in a cemetery, of all places…

Talib Kweli – The Beautiful Struggle

The Beautiful Struggle is a concept album about the state of America’s youth and how we will leave the Earth for them. “Life is beautiful. Life is a struggle. Life is a beautiful struggle.”
