Aesop Rock – Labor Days

Labor Days is all about the struggle of working class citizens and the ups and downs their lives take. It opens with Aesop Rock struggling as a reluctant member of the proletariat class. In the first line he contends that the revolutionaries of the industrial age have failed, as automation within the workplace has continued through the 21st century. The album is mostly a critique of labor under American capitalism. Most people are working for someone else’s dream, like the founder of a company. Essentially all you’re doing is chasing THEIR dream and not your own.

Masta Ace – Disposable Arts

      A New York rapper is released from a long stint in prison and moves back into the projects with his mother. Ace is reintroduced to the violence of the hood, and wants to get out of there as soon as he can. After seeing a television commercial, Ace believes he has found his perfect way out of the hood: The Institute of Disposable Arts, a college for those who want to specialize in a career in Hip-Hop. Ace goes from being a fresh-faced new student to essentially running the place. He makes friends and “meets” plenty of women. All the while, Ace’s old life in the hood keeps creeping back in to snap Ace back to violent reality.  “I made sure my message wouldn’t be lost. I wanted to celebrate us.”

Cannibal Ox – The Cold Vein

The Cold Vein is about the bleakness of one’s surroundings and it’s effect on the individual, The Cold Vein represents an enduring illumination against a world of potential dangers. The title is a metaphor for adversity—those moments when life gets so dark and heavy that you’re forced to dig deep just to keep going. “The Cold Vein is a metaphor that we came up with for adversity. Whenever shit gets real dark… when Luke lost his arm and he was hanging on to that little thing… he was in the Cold Vein there. When the light bill is due and Christmas is due too, that’s the Cold Vein. Anything that’s an obstacle or a problem, especially survival, that’s the Cold Vein.” – Vast Aire

Sticky Fingaz – Black Trash: The Autobiography of Kirk Jones

Scripted like a movie, this concept album even begins with the 20th Century Fox sound stinger. Black Trash portrays the fictional character Kirk Jones, a felon just released from prison who is now struggling to come to terms with life outside jail. Kirk Jones immediately is drawn back to crime and the sort of behavior that put him in jail in the first place. He gets into an argument, murders someone, and himself gets shot. A stickup later followed by a car chase leads to a high-profile trial for Kirk Jones.

Michael Franti & Spearhead – Stay Human

Stay Human is loosely structured to resemble a broadcast from a progressive listener-supported radio station. Brother Soulshine (Franti) and the Nubian Poetess take up the cause of the impending execution of Sister Fatima, a fictional faith healer who was convicted for the murder of a prominent businessman and his wife. As many community activists take up the charge of Sister Fatima’s innocence, the issue becomes the pivot around which an upcoming gubernatorial race takes place. Woody Harrelson does a GWB impersonation as the heartless, politically opportunist, and frighteningly dimwitted governor. Franti rails against the death penalty on the album. Influenced by the likes of Gil Scott-Heron, Public Enemy, Curtis Mayfield, and Stevie Wonder, the group runs the musical gamut, from ballads to hardcore hip-hop, as the set delves into the serious issues that surround the concept.    “I have been doing a lot of work against the death penalty. I wanted the album to be about that, but I didn’t want to write 13 songs about people in prison,” Franti says. “So I wrote the story to go around it.”

Eyedea & Abilities – First Born

First Born is a concept album dealing mainly with depression and the edge of insanity. The album questions what’s real and (the big question) what does it all mean, and muses about the state of hip hop.

Lovage – Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady By

Nathaniel Merriweather Presents… Lovage: Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady By is exactly what it promises: a sultry, slow-burn soundtrack for getting intimate. Lovage doesn’t take itself too seriously, but it absolutely nails its mission: it’s the perfect backdrop for setting the mood. The album takes a silly idea and presents it seriously, and executes it exceptionally. 

Tech N9ne – Anghellic

As with any true art, it can be misunderstood and oft taken the wrong way, such is the case of Anghellic, due to the dark images of Tech as a fallen angel calling out to the heavens with “liberate me,” and an image on the inside sleeve of a portrait of Tech as the devil himself. What was a very deep concept of a man who struggles daily to maintain righteousness and fight his inner demons that included drug abuse, infidelity, abortion, death, care for his wife, children, and his own well-being,
